Background of the study:
Social capital—defined as the networks, relationships, and norms that facilitate collective action—plays a critical role in enhancing economic survival, particularly in vulnerable communities. In Eket Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, residents rely heavily on social capital to navigate economic challenges and sustain their livelihoods (Etim, 2023). Economic survival strategies in such settings often involve community-based initiatives, informal credit systems, and cooperative ventures that help mitigate the effects of limited formal employment opportunities (Inyang, 2024). Recent research suggests that strong social networks can improve access to resources, enhance trust, and foster mutual support, thereby strengthening economic resilience (Obot, 2025). This study examines the interplay between social capital and economic survival strategies in Eket, exploring how communal ties and social networks influence decision-making and resource allocation in times of economic stress (Etim, 2023).
Statement of the problem:
Residents in Eket Local Government Area face significant economic hardships, and while social capital provides a cushion, gaps remain in the effectiveness of community-based survival strategies. These challenges necessitate a deeper investigation into the mechanisms by which social capital influences economic resilience (Inyang, 2024).
