Background of the study:
Social capital—defined as the networks, relationships, and norms that facilitate collective action—plays a critical role in enhancing economic survival, particularly in vulnerable communities. In Eket Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, residents rely heavily on social capital to navigate economic challenges and sustain their livelihoods (Etim, 2023). Economic survival strategies in such settings often involve community-based initiatives, informal credit systems, and cooperative ventures that help mitigate the effects of limited formal employment opportunities (Inyang, 2024). Recent research suggests that strong social networks can improve access to resources, enhance trust, and foster mutual support, thereby strengthening economic resilience (Obot, 2025). This study examines the interplay between social capital and economic survival strategies in Eket, exploring how communal ties and social networks influence decision-making and resource allocation in times of economic stress (Etim, 2023).

Statement of the problem:
Residents in Eket Local Government Area face significant economic hardships, and while social capital provides a cushion, gaps remain in the effectiveness of community-based survival strategies. These challenges necessitate a deeper investigation into the mechanisms by which social capital influences economic resilience (Inyang, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the role of social capital in economic survival.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of community-based survival strategies.
  3. To identify factors that enhance or impede social capital’s impact on economic resilience.

Research questions:

  1. How does social capital contribute to economic survival in Eket?
  2. What are the key survival strategies employed by residents?
  3. Which factors influence the effectiveness of these strategies?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Strong social capital significantly enhances economic resilience.
  2. Community-based survival strategies are positively correlated with improved livelihoods.
  3. External socio-economic factors can diminish the benefits of social capital.

Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it provides insights into the role of social capital in fostering economic resilience, offering policy recommendations to strengthen community networks and improve survival strategies in vulnerable settings (Ndukwe, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to social capital and economic survival strategies in Eket Local Government Area. It does not encompass other regions or broader socio-economic dynamics. Data collection may be affected by the informal nature of social networks.

Definitions of terms:

  • Social capital: The networks and relationships that facilitate collective action and support.
  • Economic survival strategies: Methods employed by individuals to cope with economic hardships.
  • Resilience: The ability of a community or individual to recover from economic shocks.
